Christmas in the Pennsylvania Wilds

This past weekend I joined the several thousand visitors to downtown Wellsboro as it was transformed into a Victorian era marketplace. We all were cold, but the atmosphere was warm and cheerful.  The streets were brightly colored with the Christmas trees and wreaths on the gaslights, and the clothing of the many who dressed for the occasion.

Street vendors sold art and craft items, jewelry, and woven garments, and the smell of all the wonderful food kept visitors looking for the many great eating opportunities. There were also local performers, either musicians or players who provided entertainment interspersed throughout the day. People who got cold, somehow, retreated into one of the many warm stores lining main street.

My younger children spent the day in town, riding the horse-drawn wagons, sampling food, and walking around with their friends, while my oldest went snowboarding with some friends at the nearby Ski Sawmill (he reported good conditions and short lift lines). This is an event for young and old to enjoy, as long as you dress appropriately.

Dickens of a Christmas fills all the local motels quickly, so make your reservations quickly. For Dickens 2009, Nature Quest will be offering a special package including lodging, shuttles, and special meals and entertainment to fill out the evening. Dickens 2009 Package

Coming up in January!

Don’t forget, we’re planning a big winter shindig called Quest Fest - Winter 2009.  If you are new to winter sports and activities, this is a great chance to come and learn about what winter in the PA Wilds has to offer.  We will have seminars on cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, plus winter camping and primitive folk skills.  The package includes lodging, meals, many activities and demos, live entertainment, and more.
